Hardox vs CCO: Which Wear Plate Is Right for Your Application?
Hardox is a through-hardened abrasion-resistant steel: hard, tough and structural. It handles abrasion plus impact, and because it is a structural steel, a Hardox liner can carry load — not just protect the structure behind it.
Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) is different: a mild-steel backing plate carrying a welded overlay rich in chromium carbides. The overlay is extremely hard and excels against severe sliding abrasion — cement raw chutes, clinker handling, mineral transfer points — but it is a wear surface, not a structural material.
The selection logic is the wear mechanism. High impact combined with abrasion points toward through-hardened plate. Severe sliding abrasion with moderate impact points toward CCO. Temperature, material size and flow velocity all shift the answer.
A practical rule: if you are replacing mild-steel liners frequently and the wear is smooth and directional, CCO usually wins on cost per hour. If components take impact from large material or carry structural load, abrasion-resistant steel usually wins.
SABAKT supplies and fabricates both — and the conversation starts with your wear pattern, not a product sheet. Send photos of the worn component and we will recommend the material that matches the failure.
